Here is a superb copy of The Physiology of Taste or Meditations on Transcendental Gastronomy by Brillat-Savarin. Published in 1925 by Peter Davies, London. This is a special deluxe-edition with a limited print run of 750 copies. This copy is numbered 271. In excellent condition - it is un-read as a number of pages have never been cut open (see photos). Finely bound with a luxury vellum spine and marbled papered boards. Released precisely to mark the 100th anniversary of the book's original 1825 French publication.

First published anonymously in France in December 1825, it single-handedly elevated food and dining from a basic human necessity to an art form and a philosophical science. It is not a recipe book, but rather a brilliant collection of essays on the senses, digestion, sleep, and the aphrodisiac qualities of truffles and chocolate. Brillat-Savarin’s famous wit coined the phrase, "Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are."

This specific printing features an introduction by Welsh author Arthur Machen and is beautifully decorated with a frontispiece and in-text illustrations by artist Andrew Johnson.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. With spotting to the outside edges. Fore-edges untrimmed. No inscriptions or markings of previous ownership.

Some slight rounding to the marbled papered corners on the boards. Otherwise all in top order, with bright gilt titles on the vellum spine.

Your antique copy of The Physiology of Taste will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.
