1925 Jane Austen Sanditon – Antique Hardback Book

Here is a superb first edition, second impression copy of Jane Austen's Sanditon. Unlike her novels this unfinished work was not published until as late as 1925. This copy was published in that year, as "Fragment of a Novel" by Oxford, The Clarendon Press. Has pencil notations through the book. Else in excellent condition.

Austen began work on Sanditon in January 1817 and abandoned it on 18 March 1817 a few months before she died. The manuscript for the novel was originally entitled "The Brothers", possibly after the Parker brothers in the story. After her death, her family re-named it "Sanditon". The original manuscript includes the first eleven chapters of the story.

"Sanditon" Fragment of a Novel is first printed from this manuscript of the novel which is held in King's College Cambridge. This is a first edition of that printing. Containing a Preface which describes the manuscript and sketches its history. There are also extensive un-paginated notes which record the numerous erasures and alterations in Austen's original manuscript.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. With the above-mentioned pencil, but no other markings of previous ownership. Tanning and spotting to the closed outside edges, and spotting to the endpapers. Has a spare spine label title plate still tucked in at the end.

In light-grey papered boards with cream natural linen spine, and the new title plate at the end of the book if you wanted to use it.
