Charmingly illustrated by Charles Robinson, here is an antique first edition copy of The Children's Garland of Verse. Gathered by Grace Rhys and published by JM Dent & Co., London in 1921. With some wear (detailed below), as would be expected of a book over 100 years old, but remaining a delightful collection. Scarce and collectable from this, the most highly regarded of the three Robinsons.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. There is a neatly-inked name at the top of the front free endpaper but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The top closed edge is tinted dark brown and this has some scuffs. All of the eight colour plates are present as called for (see photos).
Grey cloth covered boards have green, blue and orange decoration to the front and spine. With a few light marks to the cloth and one dark mark on the front. The decoration on the spine has rubbed a fair amount and has thus faded in comparison to the front. With some rubbing to the cloth at corners and at the head and tail of the spine. There are also a few very small splits in the cloth at the spine top and bottom, and one small hole in the cloth along the bottom edge of the back board.
