1913 Quality Street Book, JM Barrie, Hugh Thomson Illustrations, Original Box

A stunning large-format antique edition of JM Barrie's play Quality Street, copyright dated 1901 but this edition was actually published by Hodder & Stoughton, London in 1913. Extremely scarce in the original box. Twenty-two detailed and charming hand tipped-in colour plates by Hugh Thomson and further beautiful black line-drawn illustrations in the text (see photos). The book is in excellent condition. The box has wear and an area of loss, but remains a lovely addition.

Quality Street is a comedy in four acts by J. M. Barrie, written before his more famous work Peter Pan. The story is about two sisters who start a school "for genteel children".

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Tanning and spotting to the endpapers and scattered spotting to the early pages. Has a name at the top of the half-title page. but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. All of the lovely colour plates, with their charming Regency dress, are present and also in super condition.

Lilac cloth covered boards have ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine. All in top order.

In an ivory lidded box with paste down illustration to the front, and olive-green border and titles. The colour has tanned over time. Has an area of loss to the right-hand side of the lid (see photos). The bottom part of the box has some splits to the joints. Made from thick board and so, despite the wear it remains strong. Incredibly rare for the lovely box to survive.
