In absolutely excellent condition for an antique title of well over 100 years old. Here is a copy of Stories of Legendary Heroes published in 1912 by The Waverley Book Company of London as part of a series of books for children called The Children’s Hour in 8 volumes, with this volume being Volume 4 and this is a first edition. Some of the other volumes contain myths, legends, fairy tales and true stories of adventure and exploration (several of these I have for sale separately at time of writing). Beautifully illustrated by the highly regarded illustrator HM Brock.

Contents: Heroes of the British Isles: Beowulf; Arthur is Chosen King and Gets His Sword Excalibur; The Institution of the Quest For the Holy Grail; Sir Bors and Sir Lionel; Launcelot and Elaine; The Death of King Arthur; Owain and the Lady of the Fountain; Pwyll and the Game of Badger in the Bag; Manawyddan and the Seven Enchanted Cantrevs; Robin Hood and the Sorrowful Knight; Robin Hood and the Butcher. Heroes of France: How Fierabras Defied King Charles; The Battle of Roncevals. The German Hero: Siegfried. The Spanish Hero: Rodrigo and the Leper; The Knighting of Rodrigo; The Cid is Driven Into Banishment; The Cid Comes to the Aid of His King; How the Cid Made a Coward Into a Brave Man; How the Cid Ruled Valencia; The Marriage of the Cid's Two Daughters to the Infantes of Carrion; The Trial by Swords; The Cid's Last Victory; The Burial of the Cid.

The pages are excellent being clean, bright and crisp. Cracks open at the hinge next to the title page giving the front board a mild wobble but not effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. Has a small inked inscription on the verso of the front free endpaper but no other markings of previous ownership. The top closed edge is shiny gilt, this has a few light scuffs. With sixteen colourful illustrations by HM Brock, and charming illustrated endpapers (see photos). One of the plates has a nick to the bottom edge.

Attractively bound in bright blue cloth covered boards. In top order, the rear board has a few faint yellow marks near the top corner. The front board has a colourful paste down illustration and sparkly gilt titles. There are also many delightful line drawings in the margins.

The cloth and gilt on the spine have faded just very slightly in comparison to the boards.
