A beautiful large-format antique copy of William Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor. Wonderfully illustrated with forty tipped-in colour plates by Hugh Thomson. Thomson is perhaps now best known for illustrating the iconic peacock edition of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The illustrations really bring the plot to life (see photos). Published by William Heinemann, London in 1910. In good condition and still with the scarce original dust jacket.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with no writing or inscriptions. The pages have some mild tanning and the occasional spot. Has a partially cracked hinge at the front. The top edge is tinted light blue. The other edges are untrimmed and mildly tanned. All forty colour plates are present as called for and there are also black line-drawn chapter header and footers by Thomson.
Blue cloth covered boards have bright shiny gilt decoration having been well protected by the dust wrapper.
The dust jacket itself has one main CONDITION POINT to note which is the top of the spine which has has 2cm section cut away right at the top and has been repaired with matching brown book repair tape and so is hard to spot (see photo 2). Otherwise the jacket is very good indeed, with just a few light marks. Dust wrappers of this age rarely survive in such good condition. The jacket has now been protected for the future by the addition of a removable plastic sleeve.
