1910 Evelina by Fanny Burney - Richly Illustrated Antique Book

In very good condition, here is a charming antique copy of Evelina or The History of a Young Lady's Entrance Into the World by Fanny Burney. Published in 1910 by Macmillan & Co., London. Richly illustrated and decorated throughout with the beautiful artwork of Hugh Thomson (see photos) and in extremely eye-catching green boards with ornate gilt decoration. Has developed a lean - condition in detail below.

Fanny Burney was writing when Jane Austen was a child and she grew up reading this and Burney's other works. Fanny Burney would be one of Jane Austen's greatest influences and many believe her to be the reason for the title Pride and Prejudice as the phrase is used several times at the end of the novel Cecilia. There is also a character in Evelina called Willoughby. Fanny Burney, like Austen comments on the politics of society and manners and uses satire. Evelina is her most popular novel.

Inside pages are clean and tightly bound with no writing or inscriptions. Mild tanning to endpapers. All edges are shiny gilt. The main condition point to note is that the book has developed a definite lean.

Dark-green cloth over boards have beautiful ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine. Part of what are known as the "Cranford" series of green and gold decorated titles. Has some rubbing on the back. Some chipping to the cloth on the spine ends. The gilt decoration has remained shiny bright and this is an extremely eye-catching book.
