Here is a delightful little pocket-sized antique book. Christmas Day being selections from Washington Irving's Christmas at Bracebridge Hall. Papered card with colour tipped-in illustrations by the popular illustrator Cecil Aldin. Undated but would have been published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1908. In very good condition. Making a charming little antique stocking filler.
Washington Irving played a pivotal role in shaping how Christmas is celebrated in America. Through his writings—especially Old Christmas in The Sketch Book —he revived old English traditions of feasting, hospitality, and merriment, and helped popularize St. Nicholas, laying the groundwork for the modern Santa Claus,
Inside this copy the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound with no writing or markings of previous ownership. All three double-page tipped-in colour plates are present as called for, and there are colour illustrations also to the endpapers.
The paper covers have the odd faint dark mark and a little rubbing in places - but minor and this is a lovely little book.
Your antique copy of Christmas Day will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message if desired.
