1906 Northanger Abbey & Persuasion by Jane Austen / In Very Good Condition / Macmillan, London / Beautiful Art Nouveau Boards / Illustrated

One of the most distinctive and collectable bindings of any Austen edition, designed by A Turbayne. Here is a copy of two Jane Austen novels: Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, originally published in this edition in 1897 by Macmillan and Co. Ltd of London, this copy is a first reprint from 1906. An extremely scarce and hard to get hold-of edition, being one of the earliest of the illustrated versions. With forty line-drawn illustrations by Hugh Thomson which are some of the best in any edition of the Austen novels and with a full Introduction by Austin Dobson.

In very good condition for an antique book of 119 years old. Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound with no writing or markings of previous ownership, and no tanning or spotting. The frontispiece tissue guard has a couple of creases (see photos). With a cracked rear hinge to reveal webbing, but in no way effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. The pages are shiny gilt edged on all three sides (see photos).

With striking orange/rust brown (could be described as salmon) cloth covered boards with dark brown floral Art Nouveau decoration and gilt lettering to the front and spine. With just some very slight rubbing to the corner tips and spine ends, and in one place on the front spine joint - but minor. Has a couple of tiny splits in the cloth at the bottom of the spine. The gilt titles have stayed sparkly bright. Looking extremely striking on display.
