1905 The Homes of Tennyson Painted by Helen Allingham / A&C Black London / Beautiful Antique Book / With 20 Colour Plates / Good Condition

This is an absolutely beautiful antique book from 1905. The Homes of Tennyson is published to the usual high standards to be expected of A & C Black of London. With twenty colour plates painted by Helen Allingham, each with their original captioned tissue-guard (see photos) and with a gorgeous Art Nouveau binding.

The book is a memoir of Tennyson centred around his houses Farringford and Aldworth, described by Arthur Paterson.

Alfred Tennyson was the Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland during much of Queen Victoria's reign and remains one of the most popular British poets. Tennyson's early poetry, with its medievalism and powerful visual imagery, was a major influence on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. 

Contents are good for a book of 120 years old. There is tanning to the endpapers and light spotting throughout, otherwise the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has an inscription dated 1905 on one of the early endpapers, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. The top edge is gilt. All of the plates have their original tissue guards with the title of the painting and a short description. All are present as called for, and all in top order.

The dark blue/grey cloth covered boards have delightful decoration with the pink cabbage roses of The Glasgow School of Art. Again all in very good condition, with just the lightest of rubbing to the corners and spine ends, and one small indent on the spine joint, half-way down.
