1905 A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett : First British Edition

A great find here - a scarce first British edition of A Little Princess, Being The Whole Story of Sara Crewe Now Told For the First Time by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Published in 1905 (the same year as the US first edition). With charming decorative boards and eight colour plates by Harold Piffard.

Inside the book opens onto floral endpapers, there is then an inked-inscription on the half-title page (see photos), but no other writing or inscriptions. Spotting to the preliminaries and the frontispiece tissue guard. Then just the occasional spot and brown blemish in the text. Frontispiece tissue guard also has a little loss from a tear across the bottom right corner. All of the colour plates are present as called for, with a few nicks and creases to the edges. The top closed edge is gilt.

Blue cloth over boards have gold and black Art Nouveau decoration to the front and spine. With a paste down colour illustration and gilt titles. Rubbing to the cloth on the corners and spine ends. With a little chipping and fraying to the cloth at the head and tail of the spine. A couple of light thin scratches and a very faint dark mark on the back. The front board is in top order, with shiny bright decoration. The spine having dulled just a little in comparison.
