1904 Emma by Jane Austen / In Good Condition / Macmillan & Co., London / Beautiful Art Nouveau Boards / Illustrated Antique Hardback Book

One of the most distinctive and collectable bindings of any Jane Austen edition, designed by A Turbayne. In good condition here is a beautiful copy of Emma. Published in 1904 by Macmillan and Co. Ltd of London. An extremely scarce and hard to get hold-of edition, being one of the earliest of the illustrated versions. With forty line-drawn illustrations by Hugh Thomson which are some of the best in any edition of the Austen novels and with a full Introduction by Austin Dobson. In good condition, with just a few condition points to note detailed below.

Condition in detail: Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound with no spotting. With mild tanning to the endpapers. Has the occasional folded corner tip and creased/nicked edge. Gapes at the gutter near the beginning to reveal webbing, and with a partially cracked front hinge, but in no way effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. Shiny gilt-edged on all sides, this has rubbed slightly in places.

With striking orange/rust brown (could be described as salmon) cloth covered boards with dark brown floral Art Nouveau decoration and gilt lettering to the front and spine. Again all in good order. Has slight creasing to the cloth on the front. With rubbing at the cloth on the corner tips and spine ends. Has a few small splits in the cloth at the spine head and tail (see close-up photo). Overall an extremely eye-catching copy, looking beautiful on display.
