1898 Tales From Shakespeare by Charles & Mary Lamb - Numerous Illustrations by W Paget

I was thrilled to uncover this absolutely beautiful antique edition of Tales From Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb. Undated, but originally published in 1898 by Ernest Nister, London. In a striking binding and with the wonderful illustrations of Walter Paget including six colour plates and seventy black and white drawings (see photos). In very good condition - details below.

Tales from Shakespeare is an English children's book designed to make the stories of Shakespeare's plays familiar to younger readers. Mary Lamb was responsible for the comedies, while Charles wrote the tragedies.

Walter Paget was a British illustrator of the late 19th and early 20th century. He held a gold medal from the Royal Academy of Arts, and was the youngest of three brothers, all illustrators.

Contents: The Tempest; A Midsummer Night's Dream; The Winter's Tale; Much Ado About Nothing; As You Like It; The Two Gentlemen of Verona; The Merchant of Venice; Cymbeline; King Lear; Macbeth; All's Well That Ends Well; The Taming of the Shrew; The Comedy of Errors; Measure For Measure; Twelfth Night; Timon of Athens; Romeo and Juliet; Hamlet; Othello; Pericles.

Inside the pages are bright, clean and tightly bound. Has an inked inscription on the verso of the colour frontispiece, dated 1908 but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. All edges are shiny gilt. With lovely illustrated endpapers - these have mild tanning. All of the six colour plates are present and in good condition - there is mild spotting to the plates. There are also seventy further black and white illustrations made up of full-page plates and also illustrations in the text.

In extremely eye-catching grey cloth over boards with colourful decoration on both the front and back boards and the spine. The rear board is excellent, with a small colour vignette. The front board is also bright and striking. Has some mild scuffing to remove some colour in just a few small areas. The colour on the spine has scuffed/rubbed more so, and there is loss to the colour illustration (see photos). The gilt titles on the front and spine remain shiny bright and this is an extremely eye-catching edition.
