1896 1st Edition - A Little Mother To The Others by LT Meade - Antique Book

In excellent condition, here is an antique first edition copy of A Little Mother to the Others by LT Meade. At this time, Meade had two publishers in London: Frederick Warne; and FV White. The novel was published by both of them in 1896. By far the larger print-run went to Frederick Warne, and so this copy is even more collectible being in a deluxe, decorative binding and published by FV White. Has six black and white illustrations by Fred Barnard. Condition in detail below.

The story follows the four Delaney children, who have distinct, mythologically-inspired names: Iris, Apollo, Diana, and Orion. They live a peaceful life in a beautiful garden, but their lives are shattered when their mother falls gravely ill and passes away. Soon after, their father leaves for the Himalayas.

The eldest sister, Iris, promises to step up and act as a "little mother" to protect and raise her younger siblings. However, their well-meaning but harsh, cold-hearted Aunt Jane arrives to completely upend their lives.

In a dramatic, sensationalist turn of events, the children run away or are stolen away from their aunt's cruel punishments by a group of Gipsies, who subsequently sell them to a traveling circus. Iris must find a way to orchestrate a rescue and keep her fractured family together.

Inside the pages are in superb condition. Clean, bright and tightly bound. Just a little faint spotting to the frontispiece tissue-guard. No inscriptions or markings of previous ownership. All edges are shiny gilt.

Rust brown-orange cloth over boards have decoration to the front and spine, and gilt titles. Again in top order. With a light-grey mark on the back being the only condition point to note. A beautiful copy.
