1895 "Japhet In Search of a Father" Book: Antique Turbayne Covers, Illustrated

In good condition, here is a beautiful first edition copy of Japhet: In Search of a Father by Captain Marryat. Published by Macmillan and Co., Limited London in 1895. With numerous illustrations by Henry Brock and with striking Art Nouveau boards by Albert Angus Turbayne.

Looking extremely eye-catching on display.

One of Frederick Marryat’s most distinctive novels—his first to depart from nautical themes and instead embrace the picaresque tradition of social satire and adventure.

Opens onto super yellow decorative endpapers (also by Turbayne). Inside the pages have spotting scattered through the text and the occasional brown blemish. Has a small tear to the bottom of the front tissue guard and a closed tear to the top of page 93 (see photos). This copy has not been written in and there are no other markings of previous ownership. Shiny gilt on all sides.

In striking dark blue cloth over boards with ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine. Again in very good order. The front gilt is slightly rubbed, and there is some mild rubbing to the corners and spine joints. A small bump to the bottom rear corner of the back board.
