Here is a lovely antique copy of The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon by Washington Irving. Undated, but would have been published in the 1890s by Cassell and Company, London. With a colour frontispiece and three further black and white illustrated plates. Includes Rip Van Winkle, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow plus Irving's Christmas writings and much more. A foundational collection of 34 essays and short stories written by American author Washington Irving under the pseudonym "Geoffrey Crayon". Originally published serially between 1819 and 1820, it is historically ground-breaking because it was the first widely read work of American literature in Britain and Europe, single-handedly proving that American writers could achieve international acclaim.

Inside the pages have tanned but are otherwise clean and tightly bound. Has a partially removed bookplate on the front free endpaper, dated 1912 and a small written number in the opposite top corner. But no other writing or markings of previous ownership. All illustrated plates are present as called for.

Grey cloth over boards have blue and blind-stamped decoration to the front and spine, and gilt titles. Has a colour paste down on the front. Again all in top order. Just a faint dark mark on the bottom board.
