1888 A History of British Birds by Rev. Morris / Groombridge & Sons, London / Eight Volume Complete Antique Set / 358 Hand Coloured Plates

Here is a gorgeously and comprehensively illustrated antique set of A History of British Birds by Rev Morris. Undated but published in 1888 by Groombridge & Sons, London. In eight volumes and with 358 delightful hand coloured plates. In good condition, with just a few minor condition points to note, detailed below.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with just some occasional scattered spotting. They have not been written in and there are no other markings of previous ownership. The colour plates are also all in top order. One in Volume VII has a tanned tissue guard. With a brown blemish on the outside fore-edge of the last few pages of Volume II, and Volume V has a tear to the last page on the edge (nowhere near the text). Volumes I and II have cracked hinges at the front and back, but in no way effecting the binding of the text blocks which are good and strong. The rest of the volumes have the feel of not having been opened as much, indeed some of the pages are still uncut. The top closed edges are gilt, with some mild spotting to the fore-edges.

Red cloth covered boards have ornate blind stamped decoration to the fronts and backs, gilt titles, and gilt decoration to the spines. Again in good order. With a black ink spot on the fronts of a couple of the books. With some rubbing and a few nicks and light fraying to the spine ends. With the odd small split to the cloth joints.
