1886 The Book of the Pig by James Long - Illustrated Antique First Edition Book

In very good condition, here is an antique first edition copy of The Book of the Pig - Its Selection, Breeding, Feeding and Management by James Long. Published in 1886 by Upcott Gill, London. Richly illustrated with fourteen plates of different pig breeds and then numerous diagrams and plans for piggeries. Condition in detail below.

A highly collectible agricultural book. Widely regarded as the definitive Victorian work on porcine husbandry and historic British livestock breeds. While most surviving copies of this practical manual were heavily worn from active farm use, this copy is remarkably preserved. It is in super antiquarian condition and features its complete set of beautiful, historic full-page plates and text illustrations.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. With an inscription to the verso of the frontispiece, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Cracks open at the hinge opposite the first page of text, but in no way effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. All of the plates are present as called for. A little toning and spotting to the closed outside edges.

Rust-brown cloth over boards have black and gilt decoration and titles to front and spine. Again in top order. Just some slight rubbing to the cloth on the corners and spine ends.
