1884 Scarce - Poems of George Eliot - Antique Hardback Book

Here is a scarce antique hardback copy of The Poems of George Eliot. Undated, but would have been published in 1884 by Thomas Crowell & Co. In a lovely decorative cloth binding. Condition in detail below.

Consolidating Eliot's major poetic texts under one cover. Rather than just printing the verses blindly, Crowell included an introductory critical essay titled "George Eliot as a Poet" by Matthew Browne (a pseudonym for William Brighty Rands), originally sourced from The Contemporary Review.

Major poems featured in the Crowell edition include:
"The Spanish Gypsy": Her sweeping, tragic dramatic poem.
"The Legend of Jubal": A foundational piece tracking the biblical inventor of music.
"Brother and Sister": A deeply personal sonnet sequence reflecting her childhood relationship with her brother, Isaac.
Shorter notable works: Including "Agatha", "A Minor Prophet", "Armgart", and "How Lisa Loved the King, amongst others

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has an inked inscription on the front free endpaper dated either 1884 or 1886, it is hard to tell. No other inscriptions or markings of previous ownership. Unillustrated. All edges are shiny gilt.

Brown cloth over boards have beautiful ornate black and gilt decoration to the front and spine. Has rubbing to the cloth on the corners to reveal boards at the tips. Rubbing also to the cloth on the spine ends, with some loss across the top of the spine head (see photos). A few light scuffs to the lower, back panel.
