1878 The Beauties of Shakespeare - Illustrated Antique Book

In excellent condition, here is a lovely antique copy of The Beauties of Shakespeare by Rev. William Dodd. Published in 1878 by Bickers and Son, London. With twelve black and white illustrations after artwork in The Boydell Gallery, and in eye-catching boards. More details below.

A literary anthology which isolated famous passages, soliloquies, and poetic phrases from William Shakespeare’s plays, categorising them by theme (e.g., virtue, sorrow, love) to make his works digestible for the general public.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. Has an inked inscription on the front free endpaper dated 1879, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. All twelve black and white plates are present as called for, and all in very good condition. All edges are shiny gilt.

Green cloth-backed boards have ornate black and gilt decoration to the front and spine, and bevelled edges. Again in very good order. Has some rubbing to the cloth on the corners, spine ends and joints. Light rubbing also and a little bumping around the outside edges - but minor. A few light marks to the back. Otherwise the decoration is shiny bright, and this is an attractive book.
