A fascinating and comprehensive book. Here is an antique copy of A Manual of Domestic Economy - Suited to Families From £150 to £1500 a Year. By JH Walsh. Published in 1877 by George Routledge and Sons. An enormous book in a modern fine binding. Has fourteen superb colour plates plus more in black and white. The main CONDITION POINT to note is the book has had some water damage to the page edges at some point in it's history. There are some water stain marks and darkening to the edges (see photos). It has obviously been loved restored and mended. It is now a very firmly bound edition. PRICED to SELL. Condition in detail below.

A definitive Victorian-era household manual first published in 1856. Unlike earlier Georgian books, this text directly reflects the rigid social structures, budget-consciousness, and technological advancements of the high Victorian middle class.

Contents:
The Practice of Economy: General financial philosophy.
The House and its Accessories: Building, buying, warming, and ventilating a home.
Furniture and Furnishing: Layouts and interior choices.
Domestic Servants and Their Duties: Rules, hierarchies, and wages for staff.
The Supplies of the House: Sourcing food, fuel, and everyday goods.
Maintenance of Health and Cooking: Traditional and French cookery recipes
The Nursery: Raising children.
Horses and Carriages: Stable management and transport logistics.
Social Duties of Heads of Families: Etiquette, hosting, and social expectations.
The Domestic Treatment of Disease: Medicine, sickroom layouts, and home remedies.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with no writing or markings of previous ownership. Has the above-mentioned water staining. There is some loss to the fore-edge of the colour frontispiece which has been professionally repaired. The remaining colour plates are all in top order. Two of them are fold-outs (see photos). Has dark staining on fore-edge, the bottom edge, and some brown ink spots also on the bottom.

In a high-quality binding of dark-brown leather with marbled papered sides. In top order. The colour of the leather on the spine has lightened in comparison with the sides. Five raised bands and shiny gilt titles.

Your antique copy of A Manual of Domestic Economy will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with message to the parcel.
