Here is a super antique copy of Modern Domestic Cookery by A Lady. Dating back 168 years to 1857. Published by John Murray, London. With Illustrations including woodcut engraved diagrams in the text (see photos). Being the fore-runner to Mrs Beeton.

Often, as they were so frequently used and such an essential part of the Victorian household, cookery books of this age have not survived well. This copy however, is in good condition with a few condition points to note, detailed below.

This is a large and comprehensive book with nearly 650 pages. I have been through and checked every one! Opens onto endpapers with some staining to the top edge (see final photo). This is to the endpapers only, and the contents are unaffected. Pages are clean and tightly bound with just the occasional brown blemish and folded corner tip. 

Original light brown cloth covered boards have blind-stamped simple decoration on the front, back and spine. With gilt titles. Has some rubbing to the boards and rubbing around the outside edges and corners. With a little fraying of the cloth at the spine end joints. The gilt has dulled a bit over time.

A fascinating historical reference, still very useful today.
