1811 The Natural History of Quadrupeds and Cetaceous Animals - 119 Hand-Coloured Plates

In very good condition, and in a fine leather binding, here is a super copy of The Natural History of Quadrupeds and Cetaceous Animals From the Works of the Best Authors Antient and Modern. Complete in two volumes. With 119 wonderful hand-coloured plates. Published by Brightly and Co., in 1811. Condition in detail below.

* Please note, the new leather binding calls the set 'Bewick's Quadrupeds'. Whilst Bewick may be one of the contributing authors to these volumes, it is not to be confused with a separate quadrupeds title solely written and illustrated by Bewick. *

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has a pencil name at the top of the front free endpapers of both volumes, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. A few of the page edges have been trimmed so that the fore-edges of the plates are now missing some detail and plate numbers that would have been right on the original edge. Some pages have been professionally repaired around the outside. One plate - the very last plate in Volume I - also has a repaired edge. This is the plate of the shrew and hedgehog. Another plate - the reindeer - has some paper stuck on the surface of the paint (see photos). The numbered plates are not always bound in sequence. Some mild tanning to the outside edges.

Both volumes are in a matching, more recent re-bind. Of tan polished calf, with tan cloth sides. Gilt bands and titles to spines. Just a couple of light scuffs to the leather. A very smart set indeed.
