1909 Tales From Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb / Headley Bros, London / Beautifully Illustrated by George Soper / Macbeth, Hamlet etc

In good condition, here is a lovely antique copy of Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb. Undated, but being a first thus edition from 1909. Published by Headley Bros, London. With twenty-four superb colour plates by George Soper (see photos) plus line drawings and line-drawn chapter headers.

Tales from Shakespeare has the plays translated into prose designed to make the stories of Shakespeare's plays easier to read. Mary Lamb was responsible for the comedies, while Charles wrote the tragedies.

Contents: Romeo and Juliet; Timon of Athens; King Lear; Othello; The Tempest; A Midsummer Night's Dream; The Winter's Tale; Much Ado About Nothing; As You Like It; Two Gentlemen of Verona; The Merchant of Venice; Cymbeline; Macbeth; All's Well That Ends Well; The Taming of the Shrew; The Comedy of Errors; Measure For Measure; Twelfth Night; Hamlet; Pericles.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. With some creasing to a few pages at the end of the book. Has lovely illustrated endpapers where there is a prize bookplate from 1910 on the front paste down. With tanning to the endpapers, and light spotting to the early pages. All twenty-four super colour plates are present as called for, and all have their captioned tissue-guards (a couple of tissues have some creases).

Olive-green cloth covered boards have ornate gilt decoration to the front and gilt titles to the spine. With some scuffing to the edges and spine-joint (see close-up photo), plus a few light marks/scuffs to the boards. With mild rubbing to the corners and spine ends. The gilt decoration on the front, which includes theatrical masks, has remained shiny bright.
