A beautiful looking antique edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford. Published in 1901 by Macmillan and Co. Ltd, London. With over one hundred cheerful, detailed line drawn illustrations by Hugh Thomson (see photos). Thomson is well known for illustrating works by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and JM Barrie. Condition is good, with some light spotting to the pages. Has a small chip out of the top front board.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound, with spotting to the endpapers and mild spotting scattered through the text. Has a lovely bookplate on the front paste down, and an inked name opposite on the front free endpaper, dated August 1912. Shiny gilt-edged on all sides. The book has developed a mild lean over time.
The olive-green cloth covered boards are very attractive with a dark green stamped Art Nouveau design and shiny gilt titles on the front and spine. Again in good order. Has some light rubbing to the corner tips and spine ends, with a little fraying to the bottom front corner. Slight fading to the green on the fore-edge. The main condition point to note with the boards is a small chipped area of loss to the top edge of the front board (see close-up photo).
Your antique copy of Cranford will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift message to the parcel if desired.
