In very good condition, here is a beautiful copy of Stories from Homer by the Rev. Alfred J. Church M.A. Published by Seeley & Co., London in 1900. With twenty-four striking colour plates taken from designs by John Flaxman.
Flaxman (1775-1826) was a sculptor, illustrator, designer, and a leading artist of the Neoclassical style in England. His illustrations for Iliad and Odyssey (1793), Aeschylus (1795), and Dante’s Divine Comedy (1802) soon became widely known and, with their distinctive clean lines, contributed much to the spread of Neoclassicism in England.
Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has a fair amount of spotting to the early pages and frontispiece tissue-guard, and then scattered sporadically through the text. With a prize book plate on the front paste-down dated 1901, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. All colour plates are present as called for and in good condition.
Russet cloth covered board have black and gilt decoration to the front and spine. All in top order, with just the slightest of rubbing to the spine ends. The gilt titles are shiny bright and this is an eye-catching edition.
