1894-5 The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling / Both Early First Reprints of First Editions From Just One Month Later

Here are two antique copies of The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. Both being the first reprints of the first editions, published just one month later in each case in 1894 and 1895. Making them very collectable early editions. Macmillan & Co., London. The Jungle Book has more wear than the Second (detailed below). Richly illustrated throughout, and both gilt edged on all sides.

Inside the pages have spotting throughout the text and the occasional brown blemish. With inscriptions to both copies in the opening couple of pages. The Jungle Book cracks open at the gutter in the middle, but the binding of the text block is good and strong. Gilt edges are shiny, with some scuffs. Both books have developed a lean, over time.

Navy blue cloth covered boards have gilt decoration to the fronts and spines - identical to the very first editions. The Jungle Book has a partial ring mark in the centre over the elephants. With some light marks to the boards and rubbing to cloth on the corner tips. Has wear to both the head and tail of the spine, with some small splits to the cloth on the bottom edge, and a small area of loss on the top (see close-up photo). The Second Jungle Book is in good order. With a couple of very faint marks to the boards. Has a small bump to the top front corner and just mild rubbing around the edges.
