In very good condition, here is a striking large antique copy of Foxe's Book of Martyrs: Being a Persecution of the Protestants Carefully Compiled From Original Documents in the Government State-Paper Offices, and Known as Acts and Monuments of the Christian Church. Undated but would have been published in 1870 by The London Printing and Publishing Company, Limited. With twenty-six engraved plates plus an engraved title page. Has gilt -edged pages and a leather binding. A large and striking antique book which would grace any library.

Being a work of Protestant history and martyrology by Protestant English historian John Foxe, first published in 1563. One of the most influential books of the English Reformation.

Inside the book opens onto blue marbled endpapers with a name label on the front free endpaper. With a cracked hinge at the beginning, but in no way effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. All twenty-six excellent engraved plates are present as called for. Gilt edged on all sides.

In a black leather binding with brown cloth covered boards. The spine has five raised bands, with gilt decoration in each compartment and a red leather title plate. Has rubbing to the leather corner pieces and spine ends/joints. The black leather has some scuffing in places. The gilt decoration and titles remain bright. This is an eye-catching book.
