Here is a beautifully illustrated antique edition of Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. Published in 1920 by JM Dent & Sons, London. With twenty-four colour plates plus many more illustrations and decorations in line.

Originally written in 1877, it was composed in the last years of Sewell's life, during which she remained in her house as an invalid. Black Beauty became an immediate best-seller, with Sewell dying just five months after its publication, but long enough to see her only novel become a success.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound, with scattered spotting through the text. With tanning to the closed outside edges, and a stain mark on the top edge (but to the edge only and not effecting the inside pages). Has a pencilled inscription to the front free endpaper dated 1922, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. All twenty-four superb colour plates are present as called for (see photos). Also has illustrated endpapers, chapter headers and footers.

Blue cloth covered boards have gilt decoration to the front and spine, and black to the back. With some slight rubbing to the top corner of the front board - but minor. With mild rubbing to the corners and spine ends, with a couple of small splits in the spine at the top. A little rubbing also to the black decoration on the back. The gilt on the spine has dulled in comparison to the front.
