It tracks the evolution of building engineering from classical antiquity (Grecian, Roman, and Indian styles) through the Romanesque and Gothic periods (referred to as the \"Pointed Style\"), all the way up to \"Modern\" Renaissance and 19th-century developments. The book is incredibly visual, famous for containing 639 detailed woodcut illustrations and architectural cross-sections depicting famous world landmarks, columns, arches, and cathedrals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. Spotting to early pages. Has marbled papered endpapers. With a prize bookplate on the front paste down, dated 1879. Also has a reward blind stamp to the top of the title page. All edges are shiny gilt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn a bright red full-leather binding. Has a prize gilt stamp on the front upper and lower back panel. Lovely gilt dentelles on the inner side of the panels. The spine has five raised bands, with ornate gilt decoration in the compartments. A fair amount of rubbing to the spine joints, bands and spine ends. With a small amount of loss to the leather at the head of the spine. Rubbing also around the outside edges and corners of the boards to remove the dark red surface. Has some light scuffs to the boards.
