A lovely antique hardback copy of In a North Country Village by ME Francis. Published in 1897 by Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., London. Being a first edition thus. Illustrated throughout in the text by Frank Felloes in black and white and with a colour frontispiece.

In a North Country Village is a collection of twelve stories set in Little Crosby (‘Thornleigh’). A romantic portrait of mid-19th century village life written from an aristocratic point of view. Built around striking portraits of strong Lancashire women surviving in the face of Hardy-esque tragedy and the weaknesses of their men folk.

Inside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound with just the very occasional spot and brown blemish. Has a name on the front free endpaper and tanning to the endpapers, but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Over time has developed a lean. All edges gilt.

In dark green cloth covered boards with very attractive gilt floral decoration to the front and spine. With a few light scratches to the rear board. Has a small faded circular area just above the front titles. Rounding to the corners and spine ends and a small 0.5 cm split to the cloth at the head of the spine. The gilt on the front is sparkly bright and has dulled a little on the spine.
