1910 A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens / Scarce Antique Book / Daily Chronicle, London / Beautifully Illustrated / With Some Signs of Age

This is an extremely scarce edition of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Undated but would have been published in 1910 by The Daily Chronicle, London. Very different in feel and design to any other edition of A Christmas Carol that I have come across. With gorgeous tipped-in illustrations by Ethel F Everett, these are reminiscent of Arthur Rackham and they wonderfully evoke the ghostly aspects of the story (see photos). This copy is 114 years old and so inevitably has some signs of age, but remains a super antique version of the Christmas classic.

Inside the book opens onto a stamped name and address in the corner of the front paste down (partially obscured in the photos for data protection). There is an elegantly-inked inscription opposite on the front free endpaper dated Christmas 1912. The frontis also has tanning. With spotting scattered through the text, some faint dark handling marks and the odd brown blemish. All of the twelve tipped-in colour plates are present as called for. With a cracked rear hinge to reveal webbing, but in no way effecting the binding of the text block which is good and strong. The closed outside edges have tanning and some faint dark marks.

In brown papered thick boards with a paste down illustration of Tiny Tim and dark green stamped titles and border. With a green cloth spine which has fraying to the ends, and a 2cm split at the top joint with the rear board (see photos). The paper title plate has some rubbing and chipping.
