One of the first substantial attempts to document the naval careers of Sir Francis Austen and Rear‑Admiral Charles Austen, written by two of their own descendants. The authors had access to family papers, letters, and oral history, giving the book a uniquely intimate perspective.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSir Francis Austen eventually became Admiral of the Fleet. He served in the Napoleonic Wars and beyond. His career and character strongly influenced Jane’s naval officers, especially in Persuasion.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRear‑Admiral Charles Austen served in the Caribbean, North America, and the Mediterranean. He was known for his bravery and for commanding ships in major engagements. His letters to Jane are some of the most vivid in the family archive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInside the pages are clean, bright and tightly bound. Has sporadic light spotting and one page with a brown blemish. Has an inked inscription on the verso of the half-title but no other inscriptions or markings of previous ownership. The top edge is gilt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLight olive-green cloth over boards have gilt titles to the front and spine. Again clean and smart. Has some rubbing to the corners and spine ends. In particular to the rear top corner to reveal the board beneath (see photos). A few light scuff marks to the rear board, and slight bruising to the cloth at the head of the spine.
