Originally published serially between 1819 and 1820, it is historically ground-breaking because it was the first widely read work of American literature in Britain and Europe, single-handedly proving that American writers could achieve international acclaim.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInside the pages have tanned but are otherwise clean and tightly bound. Has a partially removed bookplate on the front free endpaper, dated 1912 and a small written number in the opposite top corner. But no other writing or markings of previous ownership. All illustrated plates are present as called for.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGrey cloth over boards have blue and blind-stamped decoration to the front and spine, and gilt titles. Has a colour paste down on the front. Again all in top order.
