1983 The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien / George Allen & Unwin Ltd, London / Third Edition, Fourth Impression / In Bright, Scarce Dust Jacket

In good condition, here is a super vintage hardback copy of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit. Published in 1983 by George Allen & Unwin Ltd, London. Being a third edition, fourth impression in a scarce, bright dust wrapper. The contents are in superb order, with no inscriptions or marks. The jacket has some nicks and tears (detailed below) but these are hard to spot now the jacket is protected in a removable archival plastic sleeve. Larger in size than earlier editions and with the addition of colour plates which earlier versions do not have.

Inside - opens and closes with map endpapers drawn by Tolkien, these have mildly tanned. The top closed edge is tinted green. There are a number of illustrations by Tolkien in both colour and line.

The jacket has kept good strong colours and has not been price-clipped. There is a mark at the bottom of the inner flap where are price tag has been removed. With small edge wear nicks along the top and bottom, and some small chips to the corners. With a larger closed tear up from the bottom next to the spine (see final photo), and with some light staining to the inner flap on the bottom edge (see photos), this cannot be seen from the outside. As mentioned above, these are hard to spot, and the jacket looks very smart in the bookseller's removable plastic sleeve.
