A scarce and highly sought after first edition HARDBACK copy of A Dictionary of Fairies, Hobgoblins, Brownies, Bogies & Other Supernatural Creatures by English folklorist Katherine Briggs. This really is THE book on the subject and is extremely well written. Exhaustively researched and the authoritative work on English fairies and folklore. An encyclopaedic dictionary of magical creatures and fairy forms. Each alphabetically listed entry is fully detailed and historically referenced plus an extensive book list and index. With black and white plates (see photos above) reproducing illustrations by: Arthur Rackham; Henri Fuseli; Richard Dadd; John Anster Fitzgerald; Richard Doyle; J Simmons; Sir John Everett Millais; Sir Joseph Noel Paton; Edward William Hopley; Vernon Hill; R Huskisson; Thomas Stothard; Cicely Mary Barker and Kay Neilsen. In addition to the plates there are also a number of line drawings.

"A magnificently researched, illustrated directory of the fairies of the British Isles. There are entries on assipattles and mumpokers, on fairy dress, on fairy crafts and food and on spells to obtain power over these fiendish little people."

First published by Allen Lane in 1976, this copy is one of those first editions. I have only ever come across later edition paperbacks before and never a first hardback and so this is an exciting find especially as it is in such good condition.

In excellent condition. Clean, bright and tightly bound. The ONLY CONDITION POINT to note with this copy is a chip out of the top of the dust jacket (see photos).

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound with no writing or marks. Appears un-read.

The unclipped dust jacket is also super being bright and un-faded. With the above mentioned small area of loss to the front and a slight crease near the spine. The jacket has now been protected for the future by the addition of a removable plastic sleeve.

Your vintage copy of A Dictionary of Fairies will be wrapped with great care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. I am always happy to add a gift card with a message to the parcel.

H 20.5 cm x W 14.5 cm, 482 pages, 0.69 kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. With the exception of a small number of countries.

* If you would prefer for your books not to be decoratively wrapped but sent simply in the full packaging please add a note to the order.
