It is the second in his series of \"Christmas books\": five short books with strong social and moral messages that he published during the 1840s. In addition to A Christmas Carol and The Cricket on the Hearth, the Christmas Books include The Battle of Life (1846) and The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain (1848).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInside the book opens with an inked inscription to the illustrated front free endpaper (see photos), but there is no other writing or markings of previous ownership. Has a frontispiece illustration and six further illustrated plates. All present as called for and in top condition. One point of note is that there is tanning to the pages immediately next to the plates - with plate-offsetting or shadowing, in a border around where the plate is on the opposite page. This is due to the paper used to mount the plates and is found in all copies of this edition. Mild spotting to endpapers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStriking blue cloth over boards have shiny ornate gilt decoration to the front and spine. Again in top order. With a few very light, faint scuffs to the back. Mild rubbing to the cloth on the joints at the head and tail of the spine.
