Here is an antique copy of The Forest Trees of Britain by Rev Johns. Undated but would have been published around 1890 by SPCK, London. Richly illustrated throughout and concerning fifty-six different trees:

The Oak; The Ilex; The Sycamore; The Common Maple; The Ash; The Box; The Hawthorn; The Blackthorn; The Cherry; The Bird Cherry; The Mountain Ash; The Whitebeam; Wild Service Tree; The Pear; The Apple; The Beech; The Poplar; The White Poplar; The Black Poplar; The Trembling Poplar; The Chestnut; The Horse Chestnut; The Holly; The Birch; The Alder; The Elm; The Wych Elm; The Hornbeam; The Hazel; The Walnut; The Lime Tree; The Barberry; The Tamarisk; The Strawberry Tree; The Spindle Tree; The Dogwood; The Oriental Plane; The Occidental Plane; The Buckthorn; The Privet; The Acacia; The Willow; The Elder; The Woodbine; The Wayfaring Tree; The Ivy; The Yew; The Fir Tree; The Scotch Fir; Pinus Pinaster; The Stone Pine; The Spruce Fir; The Silver Fir; The Larch; The Cedar of Lebanon; The Juniper.

Inside the pages are clean and tightly bound. The book opens onto brown endpapers, with pencil writing to the front free endpaper. Has partially cracked hinges at the front and back (see photos), giving the boards a mild wobble, but the binding of the text block is good and strong. With mild scattered spotting. Toned along the closed top edge with a couple of marks, and with spotting to the other two edges. Has a tear to one page which has been professionally reinforced (see final photo). Richly illustrated with engravings throughout.

Petrol-blue cloth covered boards have gilt decoration to the front and spine, with a blind stamped pattern to front and back. Clean, smart and un-faded. With rubbing to the cloth on the corners and spine ends. Has just a couple of faint scratches to the boards - but minor. The gilt decoration remains shiny bright.

So with a bit of antique wear but remaining a comprehensive and attractive book. Your antique copy of Forest Trees of Britain will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon* and sent well packaged. A gift message can be included in the parcel if desired.
