Condition in detail below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFirst published in 1773 it is a highly influential conduct book written by Hester Chapone, an English author and prominent member of the intellectual Bluestockings Society. Originally written as a private series of educational letters to her 15-year-old niece. It became a definitive textbook for female education in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe work was originally published in two volumes containing ten distinct letters: \u003cbr\u003eVolume 1 (NOT HERE) (Religion and Morality). Focuses on establishing a strong spiritual foundation. It includes letters on the Christian religion, studying the holy Scriptures, regulating the heart and affections, and governing one's temper. \u003cbr\u003eVolume 2 (THIS COPY) (Intellect and Behaviour). Addresses practical schooling, lifestyle, and social etiquette. It features letters on \"Economy\" (household management), politeness, accomplishments, geography, chronology, and systematic historical reading.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInside the pages are clean and tightly bound. Has a couple of inked names on an early blank endpaper (one from 1788!), but no other writing or markings of previous ownership. There is some staining to a couple of the blank rear endpapers (see photos).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn full calf leather, with red title plates to the spine. Has some loss to the leather at the top of the front, upper board and spine head, to reveal board beneath. Rubbing to the corners and spine joints, and in places to the surface of the boards. A little chipping to the title plate.
