For over three decades, the Outlander saga has captured the hearts of millions around the globe. What started as a simple writing exercise by an Arizona professor blossomed into a literary empire and, eventually, one of the most successful television dramas of the 21st century.
With the iconic television adaptation having recently concluded its final season on Starz, Bonhams are holding an auction sale this week of hundreds of stunning costumes and props from all eight seasons. I have been incredibly fortunate in that I was able to attend a ticketed viewing. I was awestruck by the creativity and craftmanship of everyone involved with the production, and so I thought we could take a look at the meteoric rise of the novels, and the screen phenomenon that brought Jamie and Claire Fraser to life.
The Accidental Bestseller: Diana Gabaldon’s Literary Experiment
In the late 1980s, Diana Gabaldon—a university professor with a PhD in quantitative behavioural ecology—decided to try her hand at writing a novel. Her initial goal wasn't fame or fortune; she simply wanted to see if she could actually write historical fiction.
To make the process easier, she chose 18th-century Scotland as her setting so she could utilize historical archives for research. Her plan took an unexpected turn when she introduced the character of Claire Beauchamp Randall, a 20th-century combat nurse. Claire's modern, cynical voice refused to fit into the 1700s, prompting Gabaldon to introduce a time-travel twist via the mythical standing stones of Craigh na Dun.
After posting excerpts of her work on a CompuServe literary forum, Gabaldon secured a literary agent. In 1991, the first Outlander novel was published.
Word of mouth quickly turned the book into a massive success. What was originally envisioned as a standalone experiment evolved into an expansive literary universe. The core series grew to nine epic novels—selling over 50 million copies worldwide and earning frequent placements on the New York Times bestseller list.
A Premium Screen Phenomenon
For years, Hollywood producers attempted to adapt Outlander into a feature film, but Gabaldon’s densely plotted, 800+ page books resisted a standard two-hour format. The breakthrough came when Sony Pictures Television and executive producer Ronald D. Moore partnered to develop it as a premium television series.
Premiering in August 2014, the show found its home on Starz. The production value set a new standard for historical drama, featuring authentic Scottish locations. Sweeping Highland landscapes became a character in their own right, fuelling a massive boom in Scottish screen tourism.
Unknown actors Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan stepped into the roles of Claire and Jamie Fraser. Their on-screen chemistry became the emotional anchor of the entire franchise.
Bear McCreary's hauntingly beautiful soundtrack—anchored by "The Skye Boat Song"—alongside historically accurate, award-winning costume design, fully immersed viewers in the period.
The End of an Era: The Grand Finale
The television adaptation concluded its incredible run, airing its eighth and final season. Across 101 emotional episodes, the series faithfully adapted Gabaldon's sprawling narrative, taking viewers from the Jacobite risings in Scotland to the battlefields of the American Revolutionary War.
I had my own time-portal moment wandering around the auction hall, bedecked with flags, paintings and shop signs. The attention to detail was mind-blowing. Even the letters, and other legal documents were meticulously written and drawn up as if real. There is no way a camera can catch all of that detail, but it was included anyway.
Standing in front of one of the multiple costumes, (from all the way back to the start of series one) was particularly evoking.
What a wonderfully curated exhibition Bonhams - well done! It does justice to the last time these pieces will all be together. I've just finished watching the Live Sale today (an online auction continues tomorrow), and individual Lots have been selling for thousands of pounds. So whilst being scattered to the four winds, at least they are going to devoted fans and not into storage.
Whilst saying goodbye to the flagship show is bittersweet for devotees, the Outlander universe continues to expand. The highly anticipated prequel series Outlander Blood of My Blood explores the parallel love stories of Jamie and Claire’s parents across two different centuries. It has already been re-commissioned for a second series.
Diana Gabaldon is also hard at work finishing her tenth and final novel, ensuring that the world of Fraser's Ridge will remain alive for generations to come.
